To Increase-August 2019

Well, it’s here; August has arrived and it’s in full swing. This is the month where people may start to realize that summer is close to being over. Some families may still be vacationing and some are bringing their vacations to a close.  This is also around the time when millions of students either go back to school or are starting to prepare for school.

Around the time that August comes, many people think about the decrease in certain things. They start to realize that things such as vacations mentioned above are coming to an end. They also start to think about how we only have four months left in the year.  Because of this thinking, they make start to get a little relaxed in what they have been working on. Old habits and behaviors may be trying to resurface. They may start to feel like they are on a downward slide or an overall decrease so to speak.

But did you know that one of the Latin meanings from which August is derived is “to increase”?  A definition for increase means to become or make greater in amount, intensity or degree.  So when you think about that definition, who doesn’t want to be better or greater at something?

So in keeping in line with increasing, think about what things you could increase in your life.  What things could you do to add value to or increase your intensity in to see a greater return? What could you do for yourself that would increase the degree to which you reach your personal goals? How about increasing the lives of those around you? Let’s list some things that you could do this month to add increase (whatever that increase may be) to your lives and to others.



Yourself: I could increase my;

  • Sleep
  • Exercise
  • Self-care
  • Clean eating
  • Reading
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Journaling
  • Personal reflections
  • Quiet time
  • Personal hobbies
  • Patience
  • Savings
  • Cleaning
  • Organizing
  • Routines
  • Thankfulness
  • Gratitude
  • Proactiveness
  • Prayer


Others: I could increase to others;

  • Respect
  • Honesty
  • Peacefulness
  • Time
  • Kindness
  • Support
  • Positive attitude
  • Empathy
  • Care
  • Help
  • Volunteering
  • Assistance
  • Patience
  • Compliments
  • Listening
  • Compromise
  • Donations
  • Open-mindedness
  • Prayer
  • Time to self*


Now, of course, you could add or take away from both of these lists. You could personally tailor it to yourself.  You can disregard these suggestions and make up your own increase list. The whole point is that you find a few things that you could increase on both ends. Yes, both ends. You should not just be increasing for yourself. You should increase for others too. There also may be things that you can increase both for yourself and for others.


Notice at the bottom of what you can increase for others; that it says time to self. I know you have heard the expression that you can’t give to others what you don’t have yourself. It is true. So before you go trying to save the world, make sure you save yourself, first. It makes no sense if you spend your time making sure everyone else is afloat and you’re drowning.


So there you have it, use this month to be mindful of increasing your efforts.  Try to increase your efforts for a better you. And a better you helps others too (notice that this rhymes :).  So be essentially motivated to increase your efforts this month.


“Don’t decrease the goal. Increase the effort.”
