January 2020 is here and of course and we are moving right along into this month and now we only have a few days left in it. It’s crazy how time flies and then you are left but to wonder how it goes so fast. We are officially past the happy new year’s and all the excitement and back to the everyday grind. While I know some are still being consistent with their gym goals and healthy eating goals (I am one of them), I know some of you have already jumped that ship a long time ago (just saying).
Be it as it may, we still have the prospect of a fresh year ahead of us and all the possibilities of what we can do with that. Surely by now, you have thought of what you would like to accomplish, things you would like to change, experiences you want to have this year and so on and so forth.
But, how can you and I make all of these things happen? Well, there are a lot of words that we could use to name what could help us make it happen captain, but some that come to my mind are; consistency, dedication, committed and fearlessness. Those are only a few, but I’m sure you could come up with a lot more similar words. Words that bestow the same meaning of us getting our you know what together or done.
Watch What you Watch
While every day of life is a blessing, if you are like me sometimes you can upset or frustrated with yourself because you don’t make the things happen that you would like to happen. You have envisioned so much, only to find yourself sitting on your couch aimlessly watching Netflix or combing through Youtube videos watching people whose life you wish you had (or could at least imitate in some way). I know I’m not the only one who does this so don’t judge me. 🙂
I know if I want to make it happen, I have to put my own things into motion and stop admiring everyone else. It’s nice to see what others are doing and use that for motivation, but when that’s all you do and then you start comparing your life to theirs and wondering why you can’t be more like them, it’s time to pump the brakes. STOP LOOKING AND START DOING.
Ask the right question
I plan and to reach my goals this year, but I won’t do anything if I don’t have a plan. Naturally, I am a planner, I took a whole test for it to come back and tell me something I pretty much know, but that I don’t consistently do. Crazy question, if I am a planner by nature, but I don’t plan, how will I ever have a plan? A crazy question right? But, I can’t help but think about it. Do you have a crazy question that you honestly need to ask yourself? You may have several, I know I do. ASK YOURSELF THE QUESTION THAT YOU NEED TO ANSWER.
Let’s get in Formation
I think for me this year is allowing me to reintroduce myself to me. Sounds crazy again, right, but’s it’s the truth. Who am I? What do I want? What do I like? What do I want to accomplish? What do I need to do to help me get there? Now those questions fam are the truth and if you have been having trouble answering them as have I, you need to get in Formation (yes this is a shameless Beyonce plug, I couldn’t help it). FIND OUT WHO YOU ARE.
Where are you going
A lot of times we don’t do because of fear. I speak from experience, being in a state of fear is an awful place to be. Heck, at times I am fearful of being fearful (how does that work). But, you and I have got to get past that. If I don’t think something is going to turn out right, I probably won’t do it. I don’t want to deal with the criticism and side looks that I might get. Truth be told though, if you never do anything, you never learn anything. We have to try before we can ever think about getting better. I know it’s difficult, I struggle with it every day, but you have to put yourself out there and see what happens. I counsel students all the time about how much courage it takes for their peers to step on the stage and perform. It takes courage to raise your hand and answer a question that you don’t know if your answer is right or not. I tell them to applaud their peers and to see how they could incorporate more courage to do things in their own life. It’s time I start taking my own advice. YOU CAN’T GET ANYWHERE IF YOU DON’T GO ANYWHERE.
So to sum it up fam, we need to stop with all the unrealistic and non-serving goals that we form for ourselves each year only to come up with nothing in the end. I don’t know about you but I have done that a lot in the past couple of years and it just ain’t gonna work anymore. Instead of jumping on the new year’s bandwagon so to speak, jump on YOUR bandwagon. Be about you. Be about your business. If we do that, maybe this year will truly be a NEW YEAR.
