Life. Life is so many things. It’s busy, fast-paced, hectic and so many other things that would take too long to name.
But, when you have an opportunity to make it just a little bit easier, it’s worth it. There are a few things that I have found that have been helping make my life a little bit easier and might help you as well.
Wake Up Early
I am not a morning person by far. I much rather stay up late and do all the things that I need to do at night. But, I have learned through age and experience, that waking up early gives me a much better start to my day.
In my house, through the week, while school is in, I am the first one up in the morning. I started this method while I was taking online classes for my graduate degree. Back then, my husband and I were both in school and working full time. Our evenings were difficult. Literally, everybody in the house was in school and that made it hard for us especially when it came to helping our children.
I started getting up early to do my schoolwork so that I would be free to focus on other things in the evenings when everybody was home. It really seemed to help me with my work because it seemed like I was more alert and able to focus. It also allowed me to have quiet time with myself before anybody else had got up.
Today, I don’t have to get up early to work on classwork, but I have maintained the early morning routine because I see the benefits. For one, I am able to spend some alone time with myself. I am able to journal, meditate, workout, whatever I need to do. This definitely helps center me for the rest of the day. For two, I can do household chores without everybody in my way and for three it makes for a less stressful morning by getting up before everybody else to set the tone for the day.
Suggestion: Think about what time everybody normally gets up in your house to get to where you need to be on time. Then, take that time and figure out how much earlier than that time that you could get up. You can start small (10, 15 minutes) if need be and from there see if you would like to get up a little earlier than that. Also, if you’re going to get up early, make sure you are being productive. Figure out what it is that you would like to do while you are up before everybody else.
Cook Ahead of Time
While I enjoy eating, cooking, on the other hand, can be a real pain. Cooking is even a bigger pain when your cooking for other people that want to eat dinner soon after they get home in the evenings. I never fully understood why my grandmother cooked all her meals in the morning, but now I know why.
I mentioned above that I get up earlier than everyone else. One of the things that I do during this time is cook dinner. The day before I put any meat out that needs to thaw to make sure it’s ready to cook if need be. I already have my ingredients together, so from there it is pretty easy to make. Now, if it’s something that is better off cooking fresh (fish for example) I go ahead and wait to cook it, but I have it in the refrigerator to thaw and I go ahead and pre-cook any sides that I can.
Suggestion: Make your weekly dinner list ahead of time. That way, you will already know what you need to get up early and cook and you can prepare the night before. In the morning, go ahead and cook your meal and properly store it in the refrigerator. If you are going to be late getting home, label the food and post somewhere on your refrigerator or send your family a message as to what they can go ahead and warm up for dinner.
Grocery Pick Up
If there is one thing that I truly despise doing and have despised doing for years, it would be grocery shopping. The hustle and bustle of getting to the store and shopping while dealing with a zillion other things was always depressing to me.
When a family member put me up on how she orders her groceries and just picks them up, I was curious. I had heard about grocery pick up before, but it’s different when somebody you actually know does it. Everything she was saying about grocery pick up I liked and I liked that it made things so much easier for her, so I had to try it.
Now, the days of going in and shopping for a week or two worth of groceries is long gone. I love putting in my orders on my app and going to pick up my groceries. I still go to the store, but for much smaller items and it doesn’t take me that long to go and I don’t spend as much money as I use to.
Suggestion: Find out what grocery pick up options you have in your area. Research their system and how they work. Some stores charge a separate fee for pickup, some don’t. Some stores give you discounts and special offers. Research what is available in your area and make a decision as to what will be best for you.
Use Technology to Keep Me Organized
We have come a long way and we still have so far to go as far as technology is concerned. A quick second ago we were all excited about smartphones and how they can help us in our day to day. I have realized it is so much bigger than that now.
I don’t know about you, but I have a lot going on in my life. Trying to keep somewhat organized and on track is a definite help. That’s where technology comes in to play. I use my smartphone and other devices and applications for a lot of things. I have seen where it helps me for the better.
One of the things that help me is my Google Home Speaker. I can easily tell it to set my reminders, grocery lists, to do’s and so much more. I use Google Calendar to calendar and task almost everything. With the calendar, I can share these events with my whole family which helps keeps us in sync with one another. I also use an app called Keep to keep all my notes, logins and just other stuff that I might need to reference on the go.
Suggestion: There are so many devices and apps available to keep us going. While a lot of things I use are Google based, there are so many options to choose from. From home speakers and hubs to different calendar and productivity apps. Take some time to identify what you need to keep you on track. Then you can shop for things that have features that would best benefit your lifestyle.
